As I entered the crowded matinee (for $5...I love living in a small town!) to see IRON MAN 3, I had zero expectations. I'm really rather sick of super hero movies, but this was the only wide release and it had a lot of hype. It also starred Robert Downey, Jr., with whom I have admired from afar since "Home for the Holidays." I also absolutely loved his sleeper of a movie called "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang." If you haven't seen that one, check it out. Back to "Iron Man 3"...it was my movie of the weekend.
I arrived 5 minutes after the "start time" of the movie. Some may call that late, but I know this theater has 22 minutes of trailer. 22 minutes! I guess that's what happens when you pay five bucks. It felt like HOURS of trailers, especially "Fast & Furious 6." Six of these "Fast & Furious" movies? Really? I think I saw 98% of the film in the 2 hours of trailers for it. Finally, "Iron Man 3" began. Humor abounded in this film from the very beginning. Sarcastic, snarky humor reminiscent of "Kiss, Kiss." This dry and sometimes sophomoric or even corny humor was interspersed throughout the entire movie which made it seem all that much more of a comic book movie...exactly what it was supposed to be. Guy Pearce played one of the villains in the film. Guy Pearce is also another actor with whom I have much adoration. His persona in the beginning made me almost gasp aloud when I saw him! (You need to catch his upcoming film "Breathe In.") Thankfully, he transformed back to the gorgeous yet still evil character who was enjoyable to watch. Ben Kingsley had a very unique role with which he played to a "T." I didn't even realize it was Ben until the credits rolled which, by the way, the entire audience stayed to see. Never have I witnessed that!
"Iron Man 3" embodied the typical Marvel Comic Book story. With espionage, love, heroism, loyalty, toned abs (both Downey and Paltrow), and double crossings, the guy in the suit must save the world from the evil "Mandarin." With all the bumps in the road, how can Iron Man save the world? Well, you need a cute little kid to help you, of course! Downey's character, Tony Stark, isn't exactly adept at dealing with kids and their feelings which was truly laugh-out-loud funny! The kid, Harley Keener played by Ty Simpkins, was adorable. So this movie had the gorgeous blonde, Pepper Potts aka Gwyneth Paltrow, the cute kid, the evil characters, the best buddy (Don Cheedle's character Colonel James Rhodes), and a couple of really bad guys. Pair all this with high action and great special effects and you have a hit movie.
With all the superhero movies in the last 2 years, it was wonderful to sit back and enjoy the ride that "Iron Man 3" provided. Although the end scene did seem to go on and on, it will entertain all ages and genders. There were kids under the age of 10, which I would not encourage as there was a bit of violence. The violence, however, was generally not graphic or disturbing. What made this film a home run for me was the constant interweaving of humor. I had fun. Thanks, Robert Downey, Jr. for making a movie that I think fits your personality! By the way, you looked GREAT!

I wish I had only spent $5 to see this film. It sounds as if you enjoyed this film a bit more than I did. I felt Downey and Paltrow did a good job, but found the plot somewhat lacking. The boy helper sub plot, Tony Stark turning into a ninja/MacGyver, the villain MacGuffin and iron man armor fireworks I could have done without.

DeleteI hear other critics saying similar things to you. I think it might be a male/female thing. I'm not a comic book fan nor a super hero fan so these movies typically don't appeal to me. I think that might be true for a lot of women (not all, but a lot!). Iron Man, the original was ok, 2 was awful, and 3, I thought, was a comic book come to life on the screen, but with humor. The humor is what hooked me. I really didn't like any other comic book movie except "Thor." But again, I think that boils down to a male/female thing!
